174 | It takes about 3 hours to fill a canoe with salt. It takes about 50 trips to unload the canoe and this takes a full day. The women is paid in salt. Each worker has their own 'salt pile' on the beach and then they sell it. Women make about $2 a day for their work. The male canoe worker generally earns more money, especially if he brings the salt to the shore himself in the canoe. It is noted that the minimal agricultural wage in Senegal is $3 per day. In 2007 the GNP per person was $870 In other words, these woman work very hard, make less than minimal wage and make much less than their male counterparts |
